Joe, That bow light is featured in my 1961 Attwood catalog. Since it says "new" I'd guess '61 was the first year for it.

Yes Phil, it does recirculate the inside air. If one would worry about blowing around dust, maybe a filter could be fashioned over the air inlet at the top. If one is doing a lot of sanding or other work that creates dust, I'd recommend it. It would keep the unit cleaner and protect the gas jets in ...

I have a detached brick shop and I installed one of these. They can be found in a Grainger catalog (or web site). It's gas and has an electric igniter rather than a pilot flame. If I'm using paint or chemicals, I can turn it off temporarily until the vapors clear. I'm not a big fan of forced hot air...
