Voice of reason

And with voices of reason having been heard, the idea has ended. No fiberglass for this boat. I think it was a moment of weekness as I really did not want to do it either, but this leak is killing me. I think I might have to do what Andreas is saying. I always mess this up, but Andreas are you sayin...

fiberglassing seams

I think we all deal with some small to medium sized leak that just tdrives you mad. Well I am thinking of doing something I had intended not to do. But a dry hull is key. I am thinking of running 2" or 3" fiberglassing the length of the overlapping seams underwater. Sorry the boat is a 195...

steam bending

I was just rereading some of the other comments. I forgot to comment that the steam tube I used was 1 1/2". I also had a small hole on top to at the high end of the tilted PVC. This allowed the steam to flow through. Not too big though you want to keep as much steam in and yet let the air flow....

Dan, I am also in Naperville. As well, I am taking advantage of the nice weather and doing some final varnish coats before I launch this weekend. I am curious what kind of boat you have. As well if you are in the area it might be nice to get together and discuss the trials and tribulations of these ...

My old trim had no life left in it, so I must bring in the new. Not to mention the wood frame which I rebuilt. So I need to figure how I am going to mold this trip in too the corners. My corners are replicas of the standard turns on the original frame. Thanks for your input however.

Window Gasket instalation

I am trying to put in the white Gasket around the window edge. This is the thin white strip with a dove tail type of an edge, and a tapered front inside edge. My challenge is that when I round a corner it bundles and kinks up. Not a smooth corner, and certainly not one that would stay nice. What is ...

Good temperature to Varnish?

I have much to varnish before I am on the water this spring. Could anybody share with me a good method to do so when the weather just does not want to warm up. I believe that it needs to be above 50 to varnish, right. And of course for any of you in Chicago or north this has not been the case. Does ...

Problem Solved....................or at least resolved. As many of you know from reading my various emails I am not an engine guy. As much as I am sure this motor has a continued future life, it will not be with me. Since my plans are fo an enjoyable family boating experience, I have opted out on th...

Merc 78A engine starting trouble

Hello, and help. Well I am at that stage where I thought I should see if the engine would work. It has not run in about 5 years. The previous owner apparently would start it every year, but not for very long and only in a bucket. When we tried all we got was barrely a click out of the starter. To st...

Dan thanks for your responding moral support. I like to think I did everything right, but when the results were not exactly like I exspected I was a bit dissapointed. However with that being said, I think the intake of water did level out so I do not believe I have a serious problem. My plan at this...

I have an update. I just went home for lunch and crawled under the boat. I was told by West Marine to use what I believe was more of a silicone glue for the Keel. What I discovered is that the paint had flacked off. I would also have to say that I question the bond of this area, and wonder if this i...

I appreciate the responce. In the excitement of launching I did not notice exactly where the water was coming in. I think I will take it out again specifically to watch where the water is entering. As for what I did, I put in a new keel and keelson, and replaced the back 4 feet of Garboards. I then ...

This weekend I launched!

It's true, I did launch my 1958 Cruiser Inc Vacationer 18'6". However this was a bit premature since I have not finished the window or a few cosmetic pieces topside. Labor day weekend marked two years in the garage so I felt inclined to get her out. The launch went well, sorry I still have not ...
