Only thing I can recall with high humidity when varnishing is that the varnish can take longer to dry throughly. Other then that I have not had problems with humidity. Temperature however is a different story. To cool and it take an eternity to dry and you have a greater chance of things like dust a...

Eric, If when you pull the starter rope you can feel there is good compression on all cyclinders, I would say you should be getting a decent motor without getting deeper into the workings of the engine. Also if the area under the cowling is relatively clean and not a lot of oil and dirt around the b...

I would recommend that you put a couple coats of paint on the bare wood to help keep moisture out of it. I would think one coat of cut paint followed by a coat of regular would do it for this year. Have you checked for any bad wood on the keel, keelsons, ribs and around the bottom of the transom tha...

Tom, The transom is defenetly too high for one thing. Cut it down so the anti-cavitaion plate is at or below the bottom of the hull. With the plate higher the trim tab/ anode is not doing anything for you at all. Once that is done then see if you still have a problem with steering control. If so you...

Mike, I agree! I still remember from High School shop class that is what we used when staining any wood that had a open grain. Thin the stain filler a little so we could put it on the wood with a stiff brush letting it set for a period of time and then wipe it off with burlap fabric across the gain ...

JD, It sounds like you have a float that is hanging up. Would probley be a good idea to take the carb off, clean it and rebuild it. Or take it in and have the motor tune up by a pro. It may cost a few bucks but is well worth it. I took both of my '57 Evinrudes into have then tuned by the pro right a...

Rich, I would recommend a scarf joint it is stronger then a but joint with biscuts. You have a lot more wood which is seeing the glue and it will be stiffer when bending forces are exerted against it. Shipwrights always use scarf joints when joining any wood within the same plain where stresses can ...

On a wood boat one wants BUNKS not rollers. Roller as your guys have indicated form pressure points on the hull and over time will cause the hull to deform around the rollers. As wood tends to deform under pressure and then retain the deformation a nice soild flat bunk will keep you hull flat and th...

Jim, I have not had any exprence with a jack plate but I guess if you are looking at getting the most out of your motor and need to beat the other guys to the hot fishing spot then I could maybe investing the couple hundred $'s for one. I also would questions there use on an older wood boats transom...
