Ok i thank you all for the response and i think i got enough info to correct the transom surprise. The shrinking of the transom boards was just one of many surprises i have discovered along the way of this restoration project but its still a lot of fun and we are getting closer... The spline idea sounds like a great option for me.I do have one last question.Do you think the swelling has stopped and i can proceed with that spline repair? The boat has not been in the water for exactly 1 year and has been in my garage the whole year. I didn't recognize this problem within the las...

The new wood i used was mahogany and from inside a dry storage lumber yard.I also screwed it and glued it to the old original plywood.I waited for the boat to dry out about 4 months before i installed that piece.I think the how it happened will be questionable and i have not experienced any other ex...

Sorry ,the boat is a 1960 sea lancer from cortland ny. yes its the horizontal boards on the outside of the transom.what i mean by lift is did the epoxy expand and lift the boards apart.(wish i knew how to post pics.) These boards were probably milled perfect at the factory and fit tight together(edg...

transom wood separation

The bottom two mahogany boards on the outside of the transom have separated about an 1/8 an inch. The engine is off and the boat has been on blocks in my garage.I replaced the bottom mahogany board on the inside about 6 months ago and i didn't force the board in to cause any lift at all. i duplicated...

I would definetly suggest you replace the bad wood wherever and whatever it is. I tried short cuts by cutting out just the rot and piecing in new wood and i tried using epoxy to fix broken ribs.Neither of these quick fixes worked. When i stepped on the ribs that i epoxied they cracked as i found out ...

That is one sharp looking boat. Thanks for posting.I got a long way to go to get mine like that.I was trying to hurry and cobb stuff together to try to get my 60 sealancer done but decided to slow down and fix things correctly. I got 14 ribs to replace for my next phase...Brian

It sure does help.I did save the old decking(for measurements)and as far as the dash ends i think the caulking is original ,it was put on the face end of the dash where the inside rail meets up against the face of the dash. This was probably done to prevent the boards from squeaking (just a guess).H...

Thanks Karl and Andreas,The keel is straight on the 4x4 but it only goes from the stern end to about 3/4 of the way toward the bow and i cant brace it any further towards the bow because thats were the support blocking is placed and there is a 10 inch rot spot on that part of the keel that will be w...

Storage error??

My boat is resting on concrete blocks and 2x4's and i have a 4x4 running the length of the keel with hardly any pressure applied to the keel. My garage floor is no where near level.I have adjusted the blocking a thousand different ways and still the boat sits level at the stern but an inch or so off...

Well,i got one side of the deck off fairly simple. The hardest part was cleaning out every screw of varnish.I did find some more rot under the gunwhale and dash area.I have to replace those pieces and replace a section of gunwhale and a section of the top plywood side piece. This was the good side. Th...
