Thanks for the advice. I will certainly take care of the hull before I resume the task of blending and varnishing. I was assessing the amount of work ahead of me. I will sand a spot or two to see if I can bleach, blend and varnish. First bottom then varnish. I have learned a ton from this forum and ...

By keel cap you mean the keel that screws into the keelson sandwiching the bottom plywood, right? Is the keel difficult to remove? Last fall I patched the bottom and painted the hull with hard copper racing. It's the only finished part of the boat or so I thought. I thought that all I had to do is r...

If I use an ice pick, I press lightly I am assuming. Probing pressure right? The bottom is 3/8 plywood right? I would probably be able to push a pick through with enough pressure - even on new wood. I need to be sure this bottom is strong but I do not want to damage old but good wood. Thanks for you...

I plan on scarfing in the ribs first before restoring the finish. I was told that the two boards that sandwich the keelson were called cheek boards. Do you think that I need to remove this board in order to inspect for rot? I have felt around with my fingernail and found a small amount of movement w...

rib replacement

I am tackling a rib replacement job next and want to make sure I am on the right track. The pictures included show the ribs closest to the transom. My question is do I need to remove the cheek board to scarf in a couple of ribs. Secondly. If I do remove the cheek should I run a bead of 5200 along th...

help a new guy-restoration/varnish-image included

Here are pictures from my 63 seacoaster. I was told this was the original varnish and it looks in good condition. I have to sand and varnish many spots to make her look good again. Please review the pix and lend me your thought on the easiest way to sand and varnish. I am not too excited about strip...

I was hoping not to have to strip, stain and varnish. I am new at the stain and varnishing game and am concerned that I will not stain the boat to the proper color. Were all Thompsons stained? I was told that many of these boats were varnished over natural wood. I must have received the wrong info...

original varnish how to recoat

My 63 seacoaster has only the original varnish layer from factory. It was stored inside since new. The finish of course shows wear and cracking in some areas. I will be recoating the varnish and want to know everyone’s thoughts. The decking has a couple of 12" varnish crack lines that flake off...

thanks for the tips. I do have what I believe to be some minor rot (If there is such a thing) on the keelsom. The Keelsom is sandwiched by two other boards from bow to stern. Forgive me for not knowing their name. When I reach with a finger under the starboard side board I can push in 1/8" of r...

rib replacement advice

I am restoring a 63 seacoaster and found that the ribs on starboard side near the transom are rotted where they meet the keel. I have found that 6-8 ribs have rot from the keel out only 4-5 inches. Is there a way that I can remove only the rotted sections, install new wood and retore original streng...

Not one Thompson at the Buffalo show

Can someone answer why I did not see 1 thompson at the largest antique boat show in Buffalo NY. Is this a common occurrence? I saw a handful of Lyman's, many century's and of course chris, hacker and others. I am new to the world of Thompsons and do not understand why the lack of attention. If it was...

Rod,
Your repair technic makes sense and sounds relatively easy to do. I would really like to see any pictures you have of this repair.
Thanks for your comments and I look forward to your emails.

Thanks for the reassurance. I spoke with Smiths who assured me that their "Fill-it epoxy" would work great for this application as long as the substrate material was solid. This seems to be the case with my hull. I removed this 1/8th layer in a small area and found the underlying material ...
