Hi Dan, When I bought my boat it had a strap that went over the gunals just behind the axle. That made no sense to me on a wooden boat. Hi Dan, Is there a hook on one end of the chain? The chain might be a safety chain in case you forget to hook the latch or it releases on it's own.It keeps it from tilting when you don't want it to. Another possibility is www.oldmercs.com. They seem to have a preety good selection of new and used parts. I have a 1963 Merc 850 and have done some browsing on the site myself. They even have some of the decals for some of the older motors. Good luck.
