Merc 650, any experience

I have a 58 Cruiser Vacationer 18.5' with the Merc 78A dockbuster. Though I want to restore this engine, I need another engine better suited for family use, and working sooner then later. I have a chance to get a 1965 Merc 650. Apparently it ran 2 years ago, then went to storage. Please understand m...

Attaching the Deck

I sure am glad that the reunion is not until next year. I have been making slow but steady progress, but this year just does not seem very likely to launch my '59 Vacationer. I have cut the deck pieces (9mm)and am now approaching the step of attaching them. I recall when I pulled off the deck at the...

I need to clarify, it is in fact 9mm that I have for my deck. I plan to varnish the deck. It sounds like the way to go is screw down in the areas being covered by the Mahogany trim pieces and then just nail down the areas that will remain visible. Thanks.

deck fastening

Step by step, inch by inch. I am ready to take one more step for mankind, boater kind. I am getting close to attaching the decking and am curious how many of you had done this. I have 6mm Okoume ply and plan to use 5200 to set it, as well as use bronze brads to secure. On the bow I have cut Mahogany...

Proper wood

I know many of you have gone with the flat panel of sort for the floor. I was thinking of going with wood strips that would run from transom forward across boards which would be layed crosswise for support. For the underside I was thinking of using normal oak or pine. since I have some. As well as t...

Joel, thanks for the compliment. Thorough? I think maybe just being slow gives that impression. I am however pleased up to this point. As we all know with kids, work and everything in between we get done what we can when we can. I have not tried to post pics, but I will try. Better yet you are just ...

Thanks Joel, What Varnish did you use? Was it the Schooner like Darrel used? Did either of you use the CPES before the Varnish. Any chance you sprayed that on? Did you put on multiple coats of Varnish on the inside hull. I assume that there was not any sanding either. I can not imagine sanding this ...

Varnish method

To spray on the varnish could you use one of those wagner paint sprayers. I venture to guess cleaning it my be a challenge, but I would be ok giving this thing for the cause.

I appreciate the answers. I had thought it was about a foot, apparently I was wrong. I will go with the 24" rule. As for attaching it I was going to use the 3m5200 and screws. After reading some other posts I am now rethinking this. Could you set me straight on what to use? I have a collection ...

The long and short of a keel

It has been awhile since I last posted here. The winter has put a chill to my progress. However I am back at it and have a few questions. As you all may recall, I have a 1958 18'6" vacationer Cruiser inc. I have replaced numerous ribs as well as a sizable section of the bottom of the hull. I am...

Filling screw holes below waterline

I have refastened ribs and put in a new bottom. In so doing I now have the screw holes on the bottom of the hull which I need to fill in before I paint. I have a can of Interlux Surfacing Putty. This is #257 White. I believe I was told that this was what I should use but now that I read the side of ...

Andreas, what type of priccing are you seeing on the Okume ply. It seems like each time I look the price here goes up. My thought is to use 9mm on the deck. By the way with proper supports in the bow would this support a person walking on it? Or should I go with a 12mm?

Paint over copper

I have Pettit copper 1933 on my hull. After painting, I have heard more concerns about using this paint, specifically on a boat which will not be sitting in water for exteded periods. I have had to replace some of the bottom and will need to again paint the bottom. I think I would like to go with a ...
