Thompson Canoe
I came across a Thompson Hiawatha 17 ' Canoe at a barn sale today. Owner thinks that it'e 1930's vintage. Was the Hiawatha model built in certain years or simply a long running model line. Looks like a nice canoe I like the way the ribs overlay forming a smooth floor. Any information will be appreci...

torchie, if you haven't already ... try posting a "wanted" ad on the AOMCI site "webvertize" page. Those plates are rare but they are out there, I saw one a year or so back at an outboard swap meet

AJR, a question... when the photo comes up on your screen is the motor visable in the frame? It was in my original photo but somehow got cropped upon posting

Re: Gas Tank location.
Torchie, are your motors still set up for the two line presure tanks or have they been converted to fuel pump one line system? The latter will allow more options for style and placement of tank/s. My sea lancer has a single 18 gal steel tank under the rear seat, no problem with weighht, back there i...

Re: gale engines
your motor has an electric starter and could have a generator as well. Both look like electric motors (they are electric motors) about 3-1/2 " in diameter and 7 "long. The starter will have a small gear that engages the large gear on the flywheel. The generator is driven by a thin rubber b...

Re: gale engines
That 1963 Gale is a detuned OMC V4 ( Johnson/ Evinrude). By 1963 the Jonhsons/ Evinrudes V4's were rated at 75 HP and had a new streamlined lower unit. I think that your Gale may have the old style bulbus (split case) lower unit. I also notice that it has the old 1950's style wire harness plug the O...

Re: Black oily stuff-Johnson 35hp
Burnt fuel? could be, but nothing should be comming out of that joint under the engine pan. I too suspect a lower crankshaft seal or cylinder to tower joint gasket, but don't have confirmation as yet.

Re: Black oily stuff-Johnson 35hp
I hope that we get an answer to this problem. I have the same issue with my 1957 Evinrude 35 hp, the same motor as your Johnson. I'll ask around some of the more knowlegable guys around these parts.

Good question, we will wait for someone to reply. But I'll bet dollors to donuts that back then they were chrome plated brass, oval head and slotted.
