Hi Phill I do want a darker hue. Thats why I went to the Schooner varnish. I was not sure if I could use the 1850 for a couple of base coats and then finish off with several coats (6) of Schooner and still get the darker hue I am looking for. BTW on your 12 footer do you have knees connecting the st...

mixing varnishes
I am planning on varnishing with Schooner Varnish.
I also have a new can Circa 1850 exterior varnish.
Could the 1850 be used for build coats on the interior of the hull and followed up with the Schooner Varnish over top?
Thanks
Steve

Transom finish
It may be personal preference but I wanted to check if anyone knew exactly how the paint was done at the transom. On this little cedar strip boat the ends of the strips were stained the color of the transom. I have seen photos of boats that had the strips painted the hull color. Can anyone tell me h...

Fairing
I am about to install the outside stem. I am using Sikaflex 291 LOT sealant.
I will have to do some fairing and likely over the Sika. The sealant joint will be minimal. Would there be a problem fairing over the sealant?
Thanks
Steve

Thanks Peter Still not sure how I will screw the cleats on. I am building this transom based on what was in the boat when I got it. The original transom was replaced at some point with mahogany plywood. I am not sure if the cleat design is original. Maybe someone has an old picture of what the origi...

I milled the cleats for the transom of the runabout I am restoring. I know that is not how it was don...

Transom Construction
Having glued up the mahogany for the transom, I am cutting the inside oak cleats. I do not have a piece of oak wide enough for the center piece and was thinking of gluing up a 6" with two 3" on each side. Will edge gluing be sufficient? Or do I need something stronger. I will use plenty of...
