Re: Sweet victory

Great work Ron ... she looks great! It looks like your keel and stem is made of one solid piece of white oak ... how were you able to bend that long peace and attach it?

Last night I was able to check all of the patched up areas, and all of them are just on the surface ... none of the patches go through the entire laps, so that was good news. I did chip away some of the loose putty, but most of it is solid. I also removed the outer keel and stem and didn't find any ...

Thanks Andreas for the reply. With a DeWalt DW421 5" random orbital sander, I was able to take the rest of the paint off. http://www.accuracetiming.com/shared/32.jpg As you can see in these images, I discovered several areas where somebody patched up the boat using different kinds of putty. Mos...

After a busy summer, I decided to finally start working on the boat again. Last night I applied a heavy coat of Citristrip throughout the bottom of the boat, and covered it with a tarp so it stayed as moist as possible as it sat overnight. http://www.accuracetiming.com/shared/40.jpg This morning I w...

Okay, I got it now Phill ... thanks. I think I'm going to just scarf a new piece in ... it seems to be a lot simpler than trying to bend a long solid piece.

Thanks Phill ... but I'm not understanding what you mean by a 'backer piece' of steel banding.

Excellent ideas ... thanks. I would like to try to replace both the stem and keel with a single board. I'm thinking about how I would be able to bend the stem portion of that long board. If I was to pre-drill holes into the new board, and then steam one end of it, would I then be able to attach it t...

Thanks for your replies Phill, Andreas, and John. Next question ... there's some damage to the stem and keel. Most of the stem and keel are in solid condition, except for about a foot on each side of the stem/keel junction. If I was to remove the damaged sections, would I be able to simply scarf in ...

Is it normal for the keel to not go all the way to the end of the boat? I wasn't sure if the length on mine was modified, or if that's how it was originally. How does one properly seal the gap between the garboards w/out the keel covering it?

The boat flipping party was a success! Thanks to richnle's suggestion of stacking the tires two high, we didn't have to remove the steering wheel.

After receiving a quote for over $5,000.00 to fix the keel/stem area from a local boat shop, I quickly decided that I wanted to take on this project myself. :D This Sunday I'm coordinating a 'boat flipping' party. Over the past few days I've been getting the Sea Coaster ready. I've yet to remove the...

Thanks once again for everybody's replies! Andreas, yes, I had to sell the Thomboy when I saw this one for sale. The Thomboy needed a lot more work than this one it seemed. Bill, I circled the area where the hole is located in one of the floor photos. It's located in such an odd place! Barry, I'd lo...

Thanks everybody for your replies! I'm really hoping I can bring the boat up to Chetek this summer ... that would be a lot of fun. Dan, I purchased the boat for $1,200.00 which I though was a decent price considering its condition, but knowing it needs some TLC as well. Arnie, your boat looks great!...

1963 Sea Coaster Deluxe project

Hi folks: This past summer I purchased a Peshtigo-built '63 Thompson Sea Coaster Deluxe model 1650 from a guy who owned it since about 1965 (his father purchased it in '64 new at Hanson Marina on Rawson Bridge Road in Port Barrington, Il). The boat comes with a '63 Evinrude Starflite 75 and a '63 Ga...
