Is this accurate layout

Post by Shaun »

I have been struggling to find pictures online for a couple of things. First is the transom and layout of the aft portion of the boat as far as battery box, fuel tank placement, and metal pan. Is this accurate layout? I am questioning the metal pan. I'm sure there is name for it but wonder if it was an add on later. If it is original it needs to be replaced because it is bent up. Also aren't the battery boxes supposed to be water tight? All I see is the wood compartment for the battery and there was a plastic cover for it as well.

Second is the second picture of the bow lights. I found the one with the big mast inside the boat. I only managed to find one picture online of it I think on a brochure. Which one is original? Plus the one with the mast has a red and blue lense instead of red and green. Can that be replaced? Thanks!

Hi Shaun,

The transom area layout looks factory correct. The metal tray (drip pan/splash well) is factory original. Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. did not go to a wooden splash well until the 1959 model year. So your metal splash well is correct for the '58 Sea Lancer.

The metal braces that go from the transom to the stringers are also correct. I see someone added another board to the starboard stringer (left side of your picture). Probably to reinforce the original one.

The battery box and rear seat support is correct. It probably is not wide enuff for today's battery. I rebuilt mine in the '57 Sea Lancer, using the same type of construction and design but made it wider to accommodate modern battery. It is not supposed to be water tight. I drop the battery into a plastic box and drop the entire thing into the wooden compartment. The wooden battery box is very important to the structural support of the rear seat.

The bow light attached to your boat is much more modern than the boat, It looks horrible on an old wooden boat. The one you found looks more age appropriate. The blue lens is supposed to be green. It has faded. Test it to see if it illuminates green.

Feel free to get in touch with me direct.

Here is a Jervis bow light with pennant flag pole. Original and in the box. very appropriate for your '58 Sea Lancer:

Here is the stern area of my '57 Sea Lancer taken from the outside of the boat. Motors are off the transom. Note the metal splash well/pan and the battery box which I rebuilt wider than the original:

I see the metal pan is bent up on yours too. I was thinking of having a new stainless one made up. I like the light with the big mast much better. It looks pretty cool!
