1963 75hp Evinrude

Just ordered manuals for motor. Came installed on the 64/65 ThomBoy I purchased. Does anyone else out there have this motor?
Any insight on ownership?
Does it push this boat well?
I would like to recondition. Help with paint color and prep. will be appreciated.

Sorry Woody - but I am a Mercury Guy - Try fiberglassics.com, I think they have an evinrude contingent there, and at the least those guys can point you in all the right directions.

Hi Woody, I have a 1961 Evinrude 75 HP Starflite III on my 57' Sea Lancer. We use the boat out on the big lakes ( Huron, Eire). The motor is a good match to this boat, I get 34 MPH with 4 people aboard. My motor has been very reliable, but it's a bit of a gas hog.
My 61' is the last big motor that had a conventional mechanical shift gear case and the first to have the 20amp. alternator ( uni-charger). These motors came with two types of ignition systems. My has a conventional 12 volt coil/ distributor system just like an automobile. They also offered a magneto ignition system on the motors with a conventional generator or no generator. The 75 HP motors from 1962 on had a electric selinoid shift system in the gear case. This electric system worked OK so long as no water got into the gear case. Parts for these are rare and expensive.
The first step in evaluating your motor is to do a compression test, all cylinders should have the same pressure +/_ 10 % ... you should see about 90 to 120 lbs.
Let us know which particular motor you have and what's it's condition.
Also, buying that motor/ boat is what got me to join the Antique Outboard Motor Club... these guys know these classic motors and where to get parts etc. Check out their web site.

I have a 1960 75 Evinrude, great engine. Easy to work on, parts are easy to get, likes gas!

What do you need to know? I was a factory certified mechanic for Evinrude during that time.

My 1960 75 Evinrude will push my 16' Cruiser 202 41mph w/o windshields and 39 with. My 1960 Evinrude 40 will push it 28 mph. All speeds are GPS. The 40 gets 30 miles to 6 gallons tank and the 75 gets 15/20 miles per tank gps. I have not tried my new 2006 Merc 25 4 stroke yet on the Cruisers but it gets 115 miles to 6 gallons on my john boat compared to 42 with my 1960 40 hp on the same jon boat. The Merc 25 4 stroke gets the same top speed as my 1960 40 hp does on the jon boat.

My best guess would put the Merc 25 4 stroke getting about 82 miles per 6 gallons tank on my 16' Cruisers 202. Compared to 15/20 with the 75 and 30 with the 40, all at a cruising speed of 15/20.

These motors are 100% anti-friction bearing designs... 50 to 1 mix is OK to use. A little extra oil never hurt, so I'll usually error on the rich side of the 1 Pint to 6 gal formula.

I would use a quart to 6 gallons the first two tanks, since the engine had probably not run for several years. After that a pint. I would only use Johnson/Evinrude or Mercury TCW III. More exspensive but worth it.

Received manual yesterday. It's the '64 owners manual, but I'm told it covers the '63 as well.
Manual indicates 1 qt to 6 gallons. Can use 30 wt oil as well or marine oil.

In the old days 30 was used, but engine life was much better with Evinrude 50 to 1.

Now I would use only Johnson, Evinrude, or Mercury, TCW III PEROID.

Fellas.. I am really surprised... Why would you not use the full recommended mix?.... 1:24... It doesn't cause smoking....
