Repainting a Merc ?

Post by Jerry E »

I was hoping that someone could describe the process and materials used to refurbuish an old "Black" Merc.

What do you use (do) to get the lower unit etc. ready to paint?

Where do you get the black Merc paint?

Help is appreciated.

I've painted several motors with good results. The process depends greatly on the current state of deteriation. If you just have faded paint and minor areas of exposed aluminium.... Clean and degrease use something like TSP. Lightly scuff sand. Prime with a self etching primer made for aluminum (zinc chromate type). For paint I like the automotive acrylic enamels that use the catilizing hardner ( like Dupont Centari) ... you can get this custom mixed to match any color. Check with your local automotive paint supply store... some NAPA stores even custom mix paint.

Thanks for the info. I have removed all the decals and have it almost ready to paint. I'll use your recommendations for paint and give it a whirl.
