Veneer Thickness

Post by john »

Searching for the best match for original philippine mahogany, I've found ribbon stripe sapele with only 1/2 mm veneer thickness, but merant has a veneer thickness of 1.5 mm. Meranti meets the BS1088 specification but the sapele does not apparently because of veneer thickness.

Just how important is veneer thickness for decks vs hulls?

Did finally come across 1/4" sapele with meranti core with the outer veneer being 1.2 mm. Claims to meet BS1088, basically custom made from 3/16 meranti BS1088 with sapele veneer glued to it. Problem is it is $300 a 4x10 sheet plus shipping. One sheet should do my 16' Cruisers 202 16' deck. Best I've found, should be a very close match both color and grain pattern.

I paid $70.51 per sheet for 3/8" x 4' x 8" Meranti marine plywood this past summer. Got it for a local marine plywood distributor. This is BS1088 certified material. Used it for decking on a '61 Peshtigo Sea Lancer.

For Okume 3/8" BS 1088 certified I paid $77.54 per sheet in June 2006 and $80.42 in May 2005.

At Homestead I found

Meranti 1/4 4x8 for $39 good both sides 1.2mm veneer

Okume 4x8 4x8 for $68 good both sides 1.2mm veneer

Houston Hardwoods has similar price ratio for meranti and okoume, but does not offer marine sapele

Ribbon stripe Sapele all 1/4"

4x8 good one side for $117 .6 mm veneer

4x8 good both sides for 159 .6 mm veneer

4x10 good one side $219 1.2 mm other side meranti 1.2 mm.

All meet BS1088
