Hull Repairs

I am a brand new member to thompson dockside as I have just aquired a 1962 Thompson Seacoaster and excited about starting the restoration.
My first repair is a hole in the hull and some bad wood in the hull.
What is the material of the hull both on the side and the bottom. the bottom seems to be a wider plywood? and the sides narrower strips of plywood. Is this correct and what kind of plywood is it?

Welcome aboard!

Assuming this is a boat made by Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. of Peshtigo, WI, I offer the following. If it is some other "Thompson" company (there were several "Thompson" boat firms), I need to know that to provide accurate advice.

Have you verified the year via the HULL ID and SERIAL NUMBER?

The hull planking is Douglas fir marine plywood 3/8 inch thick. Both on the bottom and sides. The upper most plank (called the shearstrake) should be stained and varnished and it is Philippine mahogany plywood. Yes, the first plank from the keel at the centerline is a wider piece of plywood.

Not sure if the 1962 boats used the plywood with a paper face overlay or not. But possible. Under the painted surface, on the outer surface of the plywood will be a layer of paper bonded to the wood. This was used to make a very smooth painted surface.

If you have not yet looked at the old brochures, I highly recommend you do so. They are available on the CD-ROM or flash drive at www.wcha.org

Good luck and keep asking questions!

Andreas

Thanks fellow Boat builders. Yes it is indeed a Thompson Bros. boat built in Peshtigo, WI. I verified the Hull No. and S/N with Dockside.
It looks like I have more work ahead of me as I found more weak spots. I'm looking forward to the work.
Thanks to Txcaptdan for the photos, this helps.

I keep a database of any and all Thompson boats. If you desire yours to be included, get me the HULL ID and SERIAL NUMBER

Hi Andreas,

My Seacoaster hull no is R21061B and Thompson Bros. S/N is 22016.

Do you have any other Thompson owners in the Kenora, ON area or northern MN?

Serial number falls into the 1962 model year range. Hull ID indicates 1,061st boat of all models made in 1962 model year. "R" is a code for the builder and "B" is a code for the trimmer. The guys that were the leadmen of the crew that built this boat.

I know I have folks in Minnesota in my database. I am near Minneapolis. Not sure if any are in Ontario. I will have to check it out.
