to stain or not to stain?

Post by andre lafrance »

while i'm waiting for a part to be made, i've been working on some interior parts. i have a 1957 15' sea coaster deluxe made in peshtigo. my queston is this: what parts of the boat were stained at the factory? pictures i've seen on this site and others look similar in appearance, and then there are all the discussions on brown mahogany or red or combinations - not to mention manufacturers. i may or may not use the information (personal taste), but i'd like to know nevertheless. thanks for any insight...

Stained: deck, gunwale covering boards, inwales, shearstrake (top lapstrake plank), windshield frame, dashboard, seats, transom, spray rails.

Not stained: interior of boat (ribs and planking)

I have used with good success Z-Spar "Standard Mahogany" stain.

I agree wirh Andreas in regards to the Z-spar standard mahogany stain.
I am currently using that on my(some what sidetracked) project off shore.

Many people prefer the redder tones that were used by Chris Craft but I think that aganst the white painted hull I prefer the Z-spar Standard color.

Hello Gentlemen! I am getting ready to do some staining of some of my mahogany parts and wanted to confirm this is the the stain you are recommending. Pettit Paste Wood Filler Stains - Standard Mahogany

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

The stuff I have used is "Z-Spar" Standard Mahogany. I have not used Pettit stain.

I have NO clue if this appropriate for a Cruisers, Inc. boat. I have used it on late 1950s and early to mid 1960s lapstrake boats made by Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. of Peshtigo.

Andreas, where do you get your Z-Spar from? When searching Jamestown Distributors they show a brand called Pettit Z-Spar but apparently that is not the same stain as you have used. Any direction as where/what to get would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I get my Z-spar filler/stain from West Marine. I have a store about 25 miles from me(which in my neck of the woods makes it practicaly next door).

Number on the can is 1095 Standard Mahogany.
This product is made by a company called Kop-Coat,inc. Woolsey/Z-Spar division. Rockaway, NJ
SKU number is 195305
Don't know if this is the same that Andreas uses but it is the only Z-Spar that I know about. They make a Red as well as a Brown but once again this is the Standard

Who knows, maybe Petit bought them. Seems like every time I go to replace a product the labels and the names have been changed.
Hope this helps.

Karl has the information.

I have not purchased any in two years or more. So...maybe Pettit did purchase Z-Spar. I have no clue.

Ok Peter
I went and checked my backup can of stain and lo and behold there is the Pettit name at the top of the label.
Same numbers as before but now it says Kop-Coat Inc. Pettit paint division on the can in stead of Woolsey/Z-Spar Division.
So I am thinking that the Jamestown stain is the same.
See what I mean about labels always changing on me.

Karl,

Sorry for the delayed response! Work has pulled me away from my passion the last few weeks I appreciate the confirmation that what I was looking at ordering was the correct item.
