paint issues
The white paint on the hull is flaking and peeling in spots. Should all paint be stripped to bare wood and if so is there a recommended paint remover? Also, the 1/4 round between the white paint and mahogany is missing. Is this mahogany or maybe oak? How does it attach. Thanks to those of you who responded to my previous questions.
If the paint is loose, scrap or sand it smooth. If the primer or base coat is attached well to the wood, no need to sand down to bare wood. Just get the loose stuff off. You may need to feather in and prime/paint those areas you removed to blend in with the other paint.
Be very careful, your 1963 boat may have a paper overlay on the plywood. Do NOT sand thru that paper. You will create a mess.
The half round is Philippine mahogany made from 3/4" wide stock. Very simple to recreate with a router and a table saw. It is nailed to the planking with brass escuthion pins. - very tiny nails. There typically is a very small screw where it attaches near the bow. Counter sunk and puttied over. This wood is stained and varnished just like the shearstrake.
