Wood putty options

I hit an unprotected corner of a village dock and put a big gouge in the hull of my boat. This is way above the water line. I am wondering what would be the best method of repair. I could sand it down seeing as how it is painted but I really never had to good of luck doing that, I would rather fill the gouge in and then paint it. Any one had any luck with a marine filler or putty ?

3M, West marine and Bondo(yes Bondo) all make a marine grade filler.
Used mostly for filling screw holes and for fairing bottom and side planks under paint.
These fillers all work fine as long as they are not applied to thick. Thats why fillers used in automotive repairs get such bad raps. They are designed to be used as a final coat to remove imperfections in the surface. Not to fill craters!.
Check the label instructions in regards to thicknees that should be used.
