Seacamper Lake test

Post by txcaptdan »

After 4 days in the water my 1965 20' Seacamper swelled enough to have only about 2 gallons of water in bilge, but not enough to trip bilge pump.

I tried a 10X9.5 prop and she came up quickly and ran at 22mph. She ran straight and level with no bad handeling problems. I was thrilled as this is the first time in maybe 7+ years that she has seen speed on the water.

My son Jon shot these on Sunday, a nice 75 degree Texas December day. You guys have been hearing about this old boat forever so its about time you got to see her in action---Me too!!!

When I launched this boat I was initially getting some water seeping inbetween laps, until that area swelled, about midship in cabin area. I have decieded to refasten the laps under the water line.

Most all fasteners I have uncovered so far have taken about a turn to come to snug, so that is probably why I was getting some leakage there.

I had not done that earlier because she seemed so tight and I wanted to lake test before venturing on. A good indoor winter project.
Will post some pics later.

Shaun,
No this is a different boat, the one I had was a 18' 370 Seacamper that won a Corinthan Award at Keels and Wheels in 2005 after her sinking and repair. A very similar but smaller overall to this boat.
I brought this one to Texas fron Kansas City in late 2005. She is a 1964 20' 570 Seacamper. I stripped her to the hull and replaced a lot of rotten wood in the upper structure.
I had to replace the bottom half of the cabin and all decks and some substructure.
I had to replace some transom material and the cross brace. She has been refinished inside and out.
I am currently refastening the laps below the water line to try and tighten her up completely.
I will have her at Keels andWheels in Houston this spring.

Dan.. how do you post photos directly into the body of your message...?

If I have a jpeg file, do I do some sort of copy/paste, or an import, or what?

It really is nice to have a picture right there next to what you are taling about..

John check out About Dockside Views there is an explanantion under posting photos. Basicly you go to another site like http://imageshack.us/ download your image then copy / paste the link to your comments, you can preview your post before submiting so you can check how it will work.
Good Luck

I finally got last large piece of boat finished. The door to the cabin was in sorry shape. Years of exposure and at least one stint in a flooded hull had left it pealing and only partially varnished.
Image
I dissasembled ventalating window and used striper to loosen old varnish then with an orbital with 100 grit i brought it all back to bare wood.
Image
I have several places to fill and I exposed all screws and refastened them to pull door together then re bunged all the screws.
I stained as usuall and then reassembled slats, seating them in 5200 were needed to reduce any rattle.
Image
It sure finishes off the bulkhead in this boat.

Took her to the Eagle Mountain Classic Boat Club show last weekend. She has been garaged so it didnt take too much to clean her up.

Image

She won 1st place outboards!!! OK I'll brag---this is got to be the finest restored Seacamper in the world, and I have seen a lot of them.

Image

Image

She is about as original as possible in colors, power and trim. I am hoping to get a lot of use out of her this summer. Some cabin interior finishing to be done yet and she is perfect.

Some update images now that I have in the water. Andy with his Thompson and I made the Ride and Show on Lake Lewisville last Saturday. About 25+ boats were there, will post show photos later.
Here she is at the show

And here she is running on Eagle Mountain Lake.

She makes about 25 with this tilt and prop

I have been collecting these for a few weeks. She has been in a slip for
about a month now and is very tight.
